Email vs. Facebook Ads for the Holidays: A Fair Fight

In the red corner, we have Facebook Ads: fast, flashy, and capable of putting your offer in front of thousands of strangers by lunchtime. In the blue corner, we have Email Marketing: quiet, loyal, and famous for turning past customers into repeat buyers without charging you per click.

Every November, business owners ask us the same question: “Should I put my holiday budget into email or Facebook Ads?”

The honest answer is that it’s the wrong question, but it’s a fun fight, so let’s go five rounds and see who wins each one.

Round 1: Cost

Facebook Ads: Q4 is the most expensive quarter to advertise. Every retailer, e-commerce shop, and local business is bidding for the same holiday shoppers, and cost per thousand impressions (CPMs) climb as Black Friday approaches. In an election year, political advertisers add even more pressure to the auction in late October and early November.

Email: Sending an email to your existing list costs a tiny fraction of what it costs to buy a click. Your monthly platform fee stays the same whether you send one email or ten.

Winner: Email. On a pure cost-per-sale basis, email almost always wins, as long as you have a list to send to. That last part matters, and we’ll come back to it.

Round 2: Speed

Facebook Ads: You can launch a campaign in the morning and have traffic by the afternoon. If you need sales this week, ads can move the needle quickly, even with no audience built.

Email: Your send is only as strong as your list. If you have 200 subscribers, you can write the best email of your life and still only reach 200 people. Building a list takes time.

Winner: Facebook Ads. When you need reach now, ads are the faster tool.

Round 3: Finding New Customers

Facebook Ads: This is where ads shine. Between interest targeting, lookalike audiences, and broad targeting with strong creative, Facebook and Instagram are built to put your business in front of people who have never heard of you.

Email: Email can’t find strangers. It can only talk to people who have already raised their hand, whether by buying, subscribing, or signing up for a lead magnet.

Winner: Facebook Ads. If you want new faces this holiday season, you need to be where the attention is.

Round 4: Turning Customers into Repeat Buyers

Facebook Ads: Retargeting works well for reminding website visitors and cart abandoners about your offer, but you’re still paying for every impression and click.

Email: This is email’s home turf. Past customers already know and trust you. A well-timed early-access offer, a gift guide, a “last chance” reminder, or a simple thank-you can bring them back for far less than it cost to win them the first time.

Winner: Email. Nothing beats talking directly to people who already like you.

Round 5: Who Owns the Audience?

Facebook Ads: You’re renting attention. Targeting options change, privacy updates limit tracking, and algorithms shift. Your audience lives on someone else’s platform.

Email: Your email list is an asset you own. If a social platform changes its rules tomorrow, your list still goes where you go.

Winner: Email. Every holiday season is a chance to grow an audience you control.

Email takes the points, but ads win the rounds that feed everything else. That’s the real lesson: this isn’t a fight, it’s a tag team.

The Tag-Team Strategy: How They Work Together

The businesses that win the holidays use both channels, and they give each one a different job.

Facebook Ads fill the top of the funnel. Use them to reach new people and send them to a landing page with a strong offer, ideally one that captures an email address, like a holiday gift guide, an exclusive discount, or early access to a sale.

Email warms people up and closes the sale. Once someone is on your list, a short email sequence can remind, educate, and convert them at a much lower cost than another round of ads.

Retargeting ads close the loop. Show ads to people who opened your emails or visited your site but haven’t purchased yet. They get a second nudge from a different channel.

This is the pattern we see work again and again: ads bring people in, email builds the relationship, and retargeting catches the stragglers.

The Verdict

If you only have time or budget for one, choose based on where you are today:

  • Have a healthy email list? Lean on email, and use a modest ad budget to grow it and retarget.
  • Small or no list? Lead with Facebook Ads to build your audience and capture emails along the way.
  • Want the best results? Run both, and make them work as a team.

The holidays move fast, and most business owners have no time for social, which is exactly why we do this for a living.
